The Emperor Hadrian Landing at Pons Aelii (now Newcastle) AD 122

Painted by Robert Bertram in 1923 as an oil on canvas, this imaginary scene, shows the Emperor Hadrian arriving at Newcastle. The bridge, which was named Pons Aelius or the ‘bridge of Hadrian’, roughly followed the same line as the current Swing Bridge.
