About Daniel Hershon

I am a volunteer working at the Laing Art Gallery. I started out in the Summer of 2013 assisting with work on the Ralph Hedley Archive Project: from there I have drifted into cataloguing and researching fine arts and helping out with organising and storing of works and artefacts, as well as occasionally assisting with the mounting of exhibitions. Every day I'm here is different, which I love, and everything I have worked on has been interesting in diverse ways. My own interests include social history and genealogy, and I enjoy researching the history behind the artists and their works. But, in case anyone is wondering what I'm doing in an art gallery, I should add that I have a lifelong interest in the visual arts: among my favourite artists are Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Suzanne Valadon, Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Eric Ravilious, Brueghel, Fortunino Mattania (think 1st World War and art deco British Seaside posters!), Laura Knight and I can now add Ralph Hedley to that list.

One of the research tasks I have most enjoyed since volunteering at the Laing has been helping to catalogue the correspondence of Newcastle artist Ralph Hedley that was left as part of a series of bequests by the artist’s late… Read more

Two James Taylors?

For my first blog post, here’s an interesting puzzle that someone out there might have an answer for. Wading through boxes of prints at the Laing Art Gallery with John Millard, looking for portraits by North-East Victorian artist Ralph Hedley,… Read more
