About Daniel Goodman

I am a Newcastle University student working towards a MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies: Curatorship. As part of my studies I am doing an eight week work placement for which I am based primarily at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, except for Tuesdays, where I am at Discovery Museum.

At South Shields, I am working with the art collection to produce two exhibitions, which are scheduled to be displayed in 2015. It’s fun, I get the chance to conduct research, explore the collection, design the exhibitions and generally just potter about the art store trying to form ideas. Having once been a keen amateur ‘potterer arounder’, I can say with confidence that I now have the experience to become a professional one!

Every Tuesday at Discovery I work in collections management where my time is usually spent inventorying the art collection in the social history store. This is very different to working at South Shields - where the work is a lot more theoretical and creative - and in that sense it is a nice break to be doing something more practical. Trying to identify objects that aren’t marked or labeled is challenging, but also really rewarding, once I am eventually able to pin down, amongst the hundreds of similar looking paintings of ships, the one that I am looking for!
